This is the amazing story of Norma, who defied doctors’ orders and went about dealing with her cancer on HER terms. Norma was 90 years old when she was diagnosed with cancer, just days after the death of her husband of 67 years.
It’s everyone’s worst nightmare to be told this crippling news, and it might seem that Norma was at a time in her life where she was ready to give up. The doctor gave Norma her list of option, surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, but defiantly Norma ignored the doctors’ order and set about on a journey you won’t believe.
Saying No to the Doctors
Under five feet tall and weighing only 101lbs, 90-year old Norma wieghed up her options after hearing the suggestions from the doctors. She replied with the startling comeback “I’m 90 years old. I’m hitting the road!”
After discussing her option with her son and daughter, Norma’s insistence on refusing medical treatment and instead going on a continental road trip was not met with any opposition for her doctors, in fact none even tried to sway her away from the idea.
“As doctors, we see what cancer treatment looks like every day,” one of Norma’s doctors said “ICU, nursing homes, awful side effects and honestly, there is no guarantee she will survive the initial surgery to remove the mass. [She is] doing exactly what I would do in this situation.”
Her doctors stood by her decision and wish her all the best!
Norma’s Road Trip
Norma’s family were understandably concerned for her to travel on her own, but they were understanding of Norma’s desire to leave the nursing home where she had live with husband Leo right up until his final day. After accepting Norma’s decision, her family agreed to accompany Norma on her trip to all the places she had always wanted to visit but never had the chance.
Norma, accompanied with her family traveled all around the US in an RV for 6 months, they traveled all around the States and even visited other countries including China. They visited numerous national parks, New Orleans, the Rocky Mountains, Niagara Falls, and have experienced the festivities in a Native American ceremony. Norma even satisfied her life-long dream of taking a trip in a hot air balloon.
All throughout the trip, Norma said her tumour had given no pain or comfort whatsoever and even said it felt like it had gone into remission. Now how about that for exposing the benefits of a positive mental attitude?
Norma’s spirit lives on
After fulfilling so many of her life long dreams, Norma passed away on 30th September 2016, leaving an amazing legacy behind. Her funeral was on October 7 her life was celebrated by her family and many of her supporters. Norma’s strong spirit in her time of pain is celebrated in all of the people she has inspired by her courage and dignity.
In her final months, Norma was no stranger to pain and yet she remained strong with the power of her mind. It was said after her death the only place on her wish list that she hasn’t traveled to is the moon.
“Keep praying every day,” she said, “and God will take care of you, even when it feels like you can’t take care of yourself.”
She urged others to reflect on happy memories and to talk about past good times.
“Storytelling is really, really helpful,” Norma said.
